The Illness Narratives back
Daisy Lafarge
Lovebug
Peninsula Press, London, 2023

In Lovebug, the author explores her particular obsession with infections, bacteria, microbiology, and certain moments in her life that seem to embody the relationship between body and pathogen. She traces the history of literature on bacteria, its historical, scientific, psychoanalytic, and even mystical sources. She dissects the analogies between love and illness and the metaphors of viruses and contagion in poetic works ranging from Emily Dickinson to Lisa Robertson. Love colonizes the entire body; all cells become this love, Daisy Lafarge tells us. The author, who is also an artist, does not intend to write a scientific or thematic essay, but rather to take us on a journey through a poetic work, where interwoven sources create a landscape traversed by microorganisms.
